Indonesian Shadow Puppet , Wayang Kulit
Classical Javanese puppet drama that uses the shadows thrown by puppets manipulated by rods against a translucent screen lit from behind. Developed before the 10th century, the form had origins in the thalubomalata, the leather puppets of southern India. (Encyclopaedia Britannica)
The body has a rod and the two sticks on either hands allow the arms to be manipulated.
The puppet feels like it is made of very thin leather or similar. It is stiffer than cardboard.
It is stitched onto the board.
The board measures 43.3cm x 49.7cm.
